Wen-ying, a housewife with a gravely ill husband, finds her escalating affairs lead to the disintegration of her family. Her son, Ching-mao, witnesses her infidelity and swift remarriage fueling his deep resentment. Raised by his father’s friend, Ching-mao’s bitterness festers. Years later, as he leaves for military training, a moment of chaos finally allows his years of resentment to dissipate. Considered the Best Mandarin Film of 1973, this film captures the contradictions between women’s sexual autonomy and motherhood, and the conflicts arising from traditional family and marriage values.
