In the deep South, a cockfighting trainer takes a vow of silence and puts his loves and possessions on the line in a bet to win a championship. This film by Monte Hellman is the ninth in his career, and he was part of the group of talents discovered by Roger Corman. It is an adaptation of Charles Willeford’s novel.
Featuring the highly popular Warren Oates (from Sam Peckinpah’s “The Wild Bunch” and Terrence Malick’s “Badlands”) and Harry Dean Stanton, with over 200 films to his credit and delivering one of his best performances in Wim Wenders’ “Paris, Texas.”
