O Apóstolo: Buscando a la Santa Compaña – Fernando Cortizo – 81’ (Esp)

March 1st – 5pm – Room 2

“O Apóstolo” by Fernando Cortizo was the first feature film made in Europe using stereoscopic “stop motion” and with a luxury team that included Geraldine Chaplin or Paul Naschy and music by Philip Glass. After its resounding success, following its premiere at the Moscow Film Festival, it was screened at the Annecy Film Festival to general acclaim and won the Audience Award, and then awarded the Special Jury Award at Fantasporto 2013. It was even shortlisted for the Oscars. From then on, everything went wrong. The people of deep Galicia had better warned the director about the dangers of the topic. There was a fire that destroyed the distributor’s copies, a sudden refusal to release the movie in more than a thousand movie theaters in the United States after everything had been agreed upon. All this led the Galician director to try to find out, with various studies by anthropologists, if the Galician tradition of the cult of the dead was justified and to what extent it had affected the film. This is the documentary that talks about that strange journey, the tradition of ghosts and spirits, passing through George A. Romero and his movie “Night of the Living Dead”, in this land so close to Portugal which is Galicia.
